An autopilot is an electrical or hydraulic system that guides any aircraft without personal-assistance. Some planes can even be put on vertical and lateral autopilot. Vertical Navigation (VNAV) and Lateral Navigation (LNAV) both play big parts when flying RNAV, a type of autopilot.

Categories[]

There are three categories of autopilots: CAT I, CAT II, and CAT III.

CAT I - Permits a pilot to land with a decision height of 200 ft and a forward visibility or Runway Visual Range (RVR) of 550 m.

CAT II - Permits a pilot to land with a decision height between 200 ft and 100 ft and a RVR of 300 m.

CAT III - Permits a pilot to land with a decision height as low as 50 ft and a RVR of 200 m. There is a 10−6 probability of landing outside the prescribed area.
